My best Physics results - ever!

The SPM results were released yesterday.

Physics topped the list of the Science subjects - there were 100% passes (which were expected). What I didn’t expect was the percentage of As. Today the school finally released the actual statistics… Physics had 71% A’s!!!

This was a big jump from previous results… Physics had 59% As last year, 47% the year before.

To be very honest, I hadn’t even expected to beat last year’s results. I thought that I might be able to just maintain the percentage, or maybe even suffer a slight drop. It’s not because of the students. It’s because I felt the percentage was too high to beat. Hehe. I think I’ve proven the Adidas slogan. Impossible is nothing.

I didn’t bring my camera yesterday, but some of my students did. Kristina sent me the photo I took with her and her friends:

Me with some of my students on the day SPM results were released
Me with my A-students: Yiling, Janelle, me, Chooi Ying, Meena, Kristina, Szeyi.
Only Chooi Ying didn’t take Physics (but she still has her A’s).
I think I’m going to miss this batch. I always miss my students.I still remember the batch before last year - that’s the batch with Berlin, Sue Ching, Suzana, Ida, Zhen Chien, Dawson, and so many more I can’t list out. It’s weird. When I first came in to the school, I was stepping in after two Physics teachers who both had left in the first semester. When I came in, I could feel the resentment emanating from the students. It was evident in their faces and in every move they made: the question was, “Is this teacher going to stay?”

Well, stay I did. All the way until they finished their SPM. I think I drove them nuts in Form 4. I not only had to whip them into shape, but I also had to win their confidence. I gave them impossible questions in class (well not really impossible; they found it impossible to answer until I showed them the answers - which were so easy!) and made them pull their hair out during their exams and their trials. And when they sat for their actual SPM, they’d stare at the questions in disbelief, and triple-check their answers, because … “Huh? So easy wan ah?”

As Matthew Pang would say, “The questions are so easy that we’d doubt our answers.” Matthew is from last year’s batch. I drove them equally as nuts, because I found that my method worked. The same thing happened, only more so. Many of my students would stream out from the examination hall during the actual SPM early, claiming that the papers were too easy. I was the one who was panicking, because the students streaming out were not the guaranteed A-scorers, based on my trials results.

I take that back. They got their A’s.

Some of my students (from all batches) have told me that they like Physics now when they didn’t before, and those are the most heartwarming words I could ever hear. And, they have even gone on to take Physics at a higher level. I’m glad I touched my students in some small way, whether or not they realise it, whether or not they appreciate it.

71% A’s! BEAT THAT!!!
