Sports Day at Sri KDU

I have no photos of Sports Day today. How sad is that?

Well.. actually it’s because everyone else used their cameras and I was using a videocamera anyway. I’m now just waiting for them to give me their photos :D But it’s hard to blog when I don’t have photos.

Anyway… the most exciting thing that happened (well… for me, at least) was that I won the silver medal for the ladies’ parent-teacher event. It was supposed to be a 4×50m relay event but there was not enough participation - only one lady parent signed up. Initially there were only 3 parents (2 men, 1 woman) so Ms Hariet decided to call up teachers to make up the teachers’ team and one to join the parents’ team, and have 2 ladies 2 men in each team. But some of the male teachers made up their own relay team without informing the people at the emcee stand, and after much lack of communication, they decided to have an all-male 4×100m relay first. So I was the one then who suggested the ladies run individual 100m sprint. Suddenly out of the blue a lot of lady teachers came out on the field to join the race too. And of all - people, Ms Minder!!

Well I got 2nd place - losing to Minder who ran in jeans and in high-heeled boots. PLUS, she even blew kisses to the crowd as she ran through the finishing ribbon. All I can say is, at least I was only 1-2 paces behind her. Haha. Congrats, Minder - what a way to celebrate your last day at Sri KDU!

She didn’t even stay for the medal presentation. I have her gold medal now, and I’m going to keep it so I can tell people I won both the gold AND silver medal for the 100m sprint.

Without making excuses for myself, Minder was in great shape, because she had been training the school netball team the past few weeks (who incidentally got the gold medal at MSSD). Me? The last time I ran was last year’s Sports Day where I won my first athletics medal, in the 4×50m relay event - also silver. We only lost because Fam Li Ying and Berlin Liew joined the parents’ teams, and of course they can run faster than us. Pfftt!!

So now I have a grand total of two athletics medals. Hahaha. I’ve never been athlete and never was a runner. I only started being active in sports after I left school - I joined a lot of sports at uni level, and wasn’t half bad, you know. I represented my residential hall in tennis, kayak, and archery. (Note that I didn’t say I won - I only represented).

My blue house cheerleading team was very sad and cried their eyes out. I guess they didn’t feel it was fair because they were the only team on the field today with perfect execution and no falls, compared to the other teams.

I reserve comment until the time is right. There were a few Blue House related incidents which I will blog about soon, and I will also explain why some of the girls were in Stunner’s uniforms instead of their own Blue House uniforms.

Congratulations to all the winners! I thought all the march past teams, tent deco teams, and cheerleaders did a fantastic job. All the athlets were also amazing. The sportsmanship spirit is very much alive in the school.

I’m waiting for the pics before I can put them up :) Am also converting the opening ceremony video I took which will include the march past and cheer. If you’re interested in a copy, let me know. Will also YouTube them once they’re converted.

Dead or alive, Malaysia voters among world’s oldest

Here’s a good read for the upcoming elections!

Let’s vote - 8th March 2008

Has anyone noticed how many advertisements Barisan Nasional has to promote themselves for the upcoming elections on 8th March? They are, but not limited to:

  • Newspaper advertisements
  • Radio advertisements
  • Television advertisements
  • Billboards

Oh yeah, and of course the usual string of flags they hang along the roads that block all the signages.

We already know from David’s proposal to Kelly that it costs about RM40k to put up a billboard ad for about a month. And we know that it costs more than that for TV and radio ads. So how is it that Barisan Nasional is able to afford those many advertisements and many billboards?

Do you see the Opposition parties having that many advertisements? No. Do you even see the Opposition parties having any advertisements at all, outside of the usual string of flags they hang along the roads that block all the signages? No.

Who has access to the country’s coffers? The government. Who is the government? Barisan Nasional. Is this where all the people’s money are going into? What the h*** do I want to pay taxes for if it’s all blown on a billboard to promote a political party that has been failing to do its job in the last 2-3 years?

All the advertisements have the same underlying pleading desperation - they’re begging the people to vote for them, reminding us of the so-called great job they’ve been doing in developing the country, maintaining the peace, and improving its economy. It’s almost pathetic.

To be honest, I’m not anti-government. I’m not even pro-opposition. I’m just disgusted at the current state of our country’s politics. I think that our ex-PM has done a great job for the country - I truly and wholeheartedly respect Tan Sri Dr Mahathir for his incredible contributions. Despite the many allegations of corruption that has occurred during his reign as our PM, I believe that many of the things that Dr M has done was for the benefit of the country. Nobody used to know where Malaysia was; everyone knew Singapore, even though it was a country the size of Penang Island, but mention “Malaysia” and everyone outside Asia used to go, “Huh?” Dr M has put Malaysia on the map. It may not be well-known yet, but at least now people know that there’s a country of considerable size lying between Thailand and Singapore and it’s not just a barren wasteland.

Since Dr M’s resignation, what have we achieved? We’ve blown more than RM1 billion of the people’s money to send a space tourist to the moon. We hear of more cases of snatch thefts, crimes against children, and corruption. OK, we can’t blame the government for that… or can we?

I stress, I am not anti-BN. I admit that I even voted for MCA in the last elections - I honestly think that Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun is a sincere person who really champions the people’s rights.

But when huge billboards in prime locations stare at me in the face as I drive by listening to irrelevant long boring speeches made by people years ago ending with a “Vote for the government, vote for Barisan Nasional” tagline… well, do they really think I’ll buy into their desperate plea to mark an X next to the scales?

Watch this.

The burn’s all black now

Ok, not really black. But it’s very obvious against my skin now. That’s one disadvantage of being so fair. The other disadvantage, of course, is an increased risk of getting skin cancer.

Update on my scalded hand
